# OpenCursor > OpenCursor is a free, open source (MIT) AI code editor and an alternative to Cursor. It is built on Code-OSS, the open core of VS Code, and works with the model you already have: your own API key, your Claude Code, Codex, Grok or OpenCode subscription, Gemini CLI, local models through Ollama or LM Studio, or free models. There is no account and no OpenCursor server between you and the model. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. Key facts: - Price: free. No subscription, no account. Paid models are billed by their own provider, at their price. - License: MIT. Source code: https://github.com/noah-thing/open-cursor - Made by Noah (https://x.com/fsconfig). Independent project, not affiliated with Anysphere (the makers of Cursor) or Microsoft. - Not the same project as PawanOsman/OpenCursor on GitHub, which is a separate VS Code extension. This OpenCursor is a full editor at opencursor.org, source at github.com/noah-thing/open-cursor. - Platforms: macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows (x64 and Arm), Linux (.deb, .rpm, .tar.gz on x64 and arm64). - Install in one line: `curl -fsSL https://opencursor.org/install.sh | sh` on macOS and Linux, `irm https://opencursor.org/install.ps1 | iex` on Windows. ## Docs - [Overview and download](https://opencursor.org/): what OpenCursor is, the models it works with, features and install. - [Full text for language models](https://opencursor.org/llms-full.txt): everything on the site in one plain text file, including comparisons and answers to common questions. - [Source and README](https://github.com/noah-thing/open-cursor): code, build instructions, privacy notes. - [Releases](https://github.com/noah-thing/open-cursor/releases): every version with download files for each system. ## Guides - [Free Cursor alternative](https://opencursor.org/cursor-alternative): how OpenCursor compares with Cursor, and who should use which. - [Free alternative to Claude Code](https://opencursor.org/claude-code-free): an agent that edits files and runs commands on free or local models, and runs Claude Code too when you have a plan. - [Use your Claude or ChatGPT plan in an editor](https://opencursor.org/claude-code-editor): run Claude Code or Codex inside OpenCursor so the work counts against the plan you already pay for. - [Free AI coding models](https://opencursor.org/free-ai-models): the free models OpenCursor works with and how to get started without paying. - [Local AI coding with Ollama](https://opencursor.org/local-models): code with a model that runs on your own computer, offline. - [Compare AI code editors](https://opencursor.org/compare): OpenCursor next to Cursor, Windsurf (Devin Desktop), GitHub Copilot, Zed, Cline, Kilo Code, OpenCode, Aider, Void, Continue and Roo Code. - [Void alternative](https://opencursor.org/void-alternative): Void is archived; OpenCursor is a maintained open source editor in the same spirit. - [Roo Code and Continue alternatives](https://opencursor.org/roo-code-alternative): both stopped in 2026; what OpenCursor offers instead. ## Optional - [Issues](https://github.com/noah-thing/open-cursor/issues): bug reports and feature requests. - [License](https://github.com/noah-thing/open-cursor/blob/main/LICENSE.txt)
