OpenCursor

OpenCursor / Roo Code and Continue

Roo Code and Continue alternatives

Two well known open source coding assistants stopped in 2026. Roo Code's extension was shut down and its repository archived, and Continue's README now says it is no longer actively maintained. If you relied on either, here is what OpenCursor offers in their place.

Updated October 29, 2026

For Roo Code users

Roo Code was loved for its modes and for working with any model. OpenCursor has Agent, Plan, Debug and Ask modes, permission levels from ask every time to full access, and runs on your own API key, a local model, a free model or a Claude or ChatGPT plan through Claude Code or Codex. The Roo Code README itself points to Cline and a community fork, ZooCode, which are also worth a look if you want to stay with an extension.

For Continue users

Continue was the open source way to add chat, autocomplete and your own models to VS Code. OpenCursor covers the same ground as a full editor: chat and agent, Cmd+K edits, Tab completion from a model you choose (including local fill in the middle models), and @ context for files, docs and the web.

Why a full editor

Because OpenCursor is the editor and not an extension, edits arrive as diffs right in the file, every agent step is a checkpoint you can roll back, and nothing depends on another extension's API staying the same.
